Today I want to tell you a bit about the development of the UI.
UI stands for User Interface.
Usually one assumes that only menus are meant with this. But a UI is everything which provides some sort of information about what the player can do and what he has to know, etc.
So the question is: What does the player have to know in Ghiube?
The ghost should not be able to interact with the cubes over the complete level. Otherwise it would be way too easy. ;D
It has a visible radius around it. Is a cube inside that radius the ghost is able to interact with it. But the game has a fixed camera angle. So it’s sometimes hard to tell whether it is inside or not. Therefore the cubes themselves change their color as soon as they enter the radius.
We also need an indicator which tells us whether or not we are able to grab a cube. We can’t grab one that is sitting below another cube. Therefore we have a hover indicator. If the player hovers a draggable cube, it will be highlighted.
So we need:
- A visible radius
- A highlight color for cubes inside the radius
- A highlight color for cubes which can be dragged
And here is the result.
