Fran Bow is is easily one of the best indie horror adventures out there. (At least in my opinion).
Get it on GoG, Steam, Humble Store, Itch.io or Gamejolt,
It starts very strong in a quite familiar setting when it comes to horror games. But it quickly ends up being very unique.
You play as the ten year old girl Fran, whose parents got killed. She herself got locked away in an asylum and now tries to escape and find her cat.
The adventure gameplay is very similar to other games in this genre plus some minigames here and there.
But here comes a special thing:
You get some pills, which allows Fran to see some sort of sick alternate reality. So you have to puzzle your way through two different realities.
Overall the puzzles are often unique, creative and fun to solve. Sometimes in a very „childish“ way, but most of the time they seem to be logic.
There were only a few rare spots where I needed a hint or two.
The artstyle is also very unique and looks great. It might not be everyones taste, but the overall quality is very high and consistent.
There are a tons of details and love was put into every single screen. You will also see many „close up“ drawings and nice animations.
I can’t think of any real contras for this game, so it’s hard to make a pro/contra list.
All I can say is, that if you are looking for a great and very unique adventure with a story you’ll think about for quite a while, you can’t do anything wrong with Fran Bow.
